Artist Statement - Sun Burnt Series
September, 2007
With this series entitled Sun Burnt, I am most interested
in depicting the vulnerability of people and their ultimate mortality
within the context of the common, everyday landscape. The process
to create these images began by utilizing appropriated imagery
through digitally scanning a1960s Americana postcards. The resulting
digital translation is rendered or etched by hand with magnified
sunlight. Thus, reinforcing the very notion of being “burnt” or
“burnt out” mentally or physically by the challenges
that occur in our everyday experience. By ultimately reinterpreting
this burnt image as a photograph, my intention is to not only express
its ironic creation, but to suggest larger themes of preservation,
loss and memory.
